9-11 Ten Years on

Sep 11 2011 11:30 PM | Jay in News

Never Forget!
I remember that day, I was in Hanau Germany doing a project with my unit. When I first heard the news over AFN, I thought it was some sort of joke. Then as the news poured in. I knew it wasnt a joke and that I was going to have a hot summer.
In 2003 I did.

With the update to the new forum soft, the good folks at IPB have created a useable calendar for there forum soft.
Three of the major improvements on it now include the ability to comment on entries, to RSVP to an event and to download the calendar as in iCal format.
If someone from the HPDE gang and Cone-dodgers United of NorCal want to help out I can work with you all create and maintain an evens section specific to your needs.
Also for carshows and drag events feel free to PM me to get it listed.

You can see our test event here

$40 Lightweight Carbon Hood

Jul 24 2011 06:24 PM | fourced4cyl in News

You can view the original thread by fourced4cyl here

I have been on the hunt for a super cheap carbon hood so I could try this experiment, and finally found exactly what I was looking for.

Thanks to PCYang, I scored this beauty for a whopping 40 bucks. I think it is an old seibon that was supposedly on Wilson's yellow when SE had their little accident a while back.

Posted Image

Needs some clear coat work.

Posted Image

Underside isnt too bad.

Posted Image

Having watched SSE and other high end time attack cars, a common theme I noticed was that the hood was nothing more than a skin of carbon. SSE I think rocks the 2500 dollar dry carbon seibon that is about 7lbs. If I could, id do the same, but I cant, so my hood is worth $40 instead. But...I decided to try making it just a skin like the cool ones.

So here is what I did today.

Grabbed my favorite tools...

Posted Image

Fired up my free air compressor that blew the breaker on the house about 5 times...and got to work.

Posted Image

First step was to cut around the perimeter of the underside structural support.

Posted Image

Then I cut around the vent on the underside.

Posted Image

There were some tricky spots where the subframe was attached to the skin. I cut around these areas to free the subframe and will go back and clean up the remnants later. Most of the left over pieces peeled off once the sub frame was free.

Posted Image

Here is what the inside of your carbon hood looks like!

Posted Image

And here is the subframe that I removed.

So now, the burning question is how much weight have I saved, right? (well I hope thats the burning question as that was the point of this whole thing).

Here is the Seibon dry carbon hood, weighs 8.59lbs
http://www.seiboncar...TEVO8-CWII-DRY/

My hood weighed 17lbs according to my digital fish scale. Didnt have the same scale with me, but used my bathroom scale.

My weight:

Posted Image

Lets call that 126lbs.

My weight while holding the hood (and while looking like a dweeb):

Posted Image

Looks like 137lbs.

So....maths

137
-126

= 11lbs

Stock hood is supposedly 17.6, soo...maths

17.6
-11

= 6.6lbs of savings

Im not done yet, though. I will be removing more material and sanding down the clear on the exterior.

So far I think im on a roll for a cheap, light weight hood.

We are a Go!

Jul 23 2011 08:22 PM | Jay in News

OMG It worked, well hopefully.
I just finised updating EvoEmpire.org to IPB 3.2 forum soft and adding a front page as you can see. Hopefully I didn't dork anything up to bad. You can read about all the new features with the 3.2 Forum soft here on the IPB site or you can just start to play. I am still working on gettting chat going, but that should be no big deal.
Also as you can see we have a tagging system for post. Enjoy...but if I start to see inappropriate tags or the system abused then it will go away. So enjoy your new diggs and hope you like it. I do.
